Video

As one who, from the outset, made audio recordings as well as photographs, I was always searching for a presentation format that would allow me to combine sound with still pictures in a way that was cheap and user-friendly but which honoured the independent spirit of my practice: a freestanding, self-made 'Scrapbook TV'.

However, for the first three decades of my working life, the tools that could make this happen were industrial in scale and affordable only by producers with sizeable budgets; out of reach for the likes of me.

In the late 1990s, though, with the arrival of the digital age, new cheaper tools came on the market: desktop computers and scanners with software for image handling and sound recording, together with video editing packages for pulling it all together.

At last it was possible to make broadcast-quality TV 'on the kitchen table', and to use the internet to publish it. And so it was that, between 2000 and 2021, I made the 40 short video pieces I present here, all drawing on the assets in my archive.

I've arranged them under three headings: Digital Stories, My Photography Stories, and Talking Pictures.
