Northern Reportage 1972-83
The many large photographic series which I compiled while based in the north of England — Greame Street, June Street, the bus portraits, Bancroft Shed, Cyril killing his pigs, Peter the steeplejack, Charlie in the flues, and so on — all fall on the page neatly enough. However, in the files, there are also some pictures which, although they help to tell the story of the time, do not form a part of any completed series. Many were experiments, the beginning of stories that never came to anything. Some were serendipitous, things I noticed while passing through. Others were done on assignment for magazines like New Society or newspapers like The Observer. These are my 'orphan' photographs.
