James Nutter & Sons at Bancroft Shed, Barnoldswick, Lancashire, 1975-80

Between 1975 and 1977 I worked as photographer-in-residence to the Borough of Pendle in north-east Lancashire: the towns of Nelson, Colne, Barnoldswick and Earby. There I made a series of extensive documentary studies using photography and audio recordings.

Bancroft Shed was the last remaining steam powered cotton weaving mill in the district (indeed one of the last in the whole country), its buildings and machinery having remained largely unchanged since its construction during World War One.

I remained living in Pendle until 1981, maintaining my documentation of Bancroft Shed until it was demolished.
